What Could Be Causing Your Heel Pain?

Are you dealing with heel pain in San Antonio, TX? Here’s what might be going on.

Heel pain is one of the most common issues that our San Antonio, TX, podiatrist Dr. Caroline Gaynor Elko hears about from patients.Heel-Pain Whether you’re on your feet all day for work, you are an avid runner or you are wearing old shoes that should have been replaced months ago, there are many reasons why heel pain may be happening to you.

What are the causes of heel pain?

While there are many causes of heel pain, the two most common causes are plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendonitis.

Plantar Fasciitis

This condition causes inflammation and microtears within the thick band of tissue (known as the plantar fascia) that runs from the heel bone along the arches of the foot to the toes. Symptoms include a sharp, stabbing pain felt under the heel that may be worse in the morning or after long periods of inactivity. While this condition is usually acute, it is possible for plantar fasciitis to become chronic if not properly treated.

Achilles Tendonitis

This causes inflammation of the Achilles tendon, the longest tendon in the body that connects the calf to the back of the heel bone. Achilles tendonitis is often characterized by a burning pain that originates above the heel bone. The location of the pain can help our San Antonio, TX, foot doctor determine whether your heel pain is related to plantar fasciitis or Achilles tendonitis. Like plantar fasciitis, this condition is also easy to treat with rest, ice, pain relievers, and stretching exercises.

Other less common causes of heel pain include:

  • Tarsal tunnel syndrome
  • Heel spur
  • Stress fractures
  • Bursitis
  • Bruising of the heel pad
  • Fat pad atrophy
